Margot Robbie’s status as the mentally deranged Harley Quinn is currently unknown with the recent news that The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn would be taking over as co-lead of the DC Extended Universe (newly christened as simply the DC Universe) alongside film producer Peter Safran but there’s one subject matter from the actress that she’d really like to bring to life on the silver screen: a Harley Quinn/Poison Ivy romance movie.
“I have been pushing for that for years,” Robbie told Comicbook.com during the press tour for her upcoming film Babylon. “I cannot tell you how hard I’ve been pushing for that. I want it too.”
When asked if she had a particular actress in mind who could fill the botanical leotard of the plant-controlling of Ivy, Robbie continued, “Honestly… I always picture like Poison Ivy in the comics. I don’t really actually picture an actress doing it.”
Robbie also shared her thoughts on the news concerning the newly appointed co-CEOs of the DC Universe, saying, “I know it’s crazy, and Peter Safran, so he was also the producer on The Suicide Squad, so I know them both really well and they’re a dynamic duo. I think that’s such a get for DC.”
Robbie’s first appearance as Harley Quinn was in the David Ayer directed Suicide Squad from 2016; she’d reprise the role for Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey in 2020 and in the James Gunn-helmed The Suicide Squad in 2021. Robbie had a prominent role in Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and the director has sung the actress’ praises in the role in the past, suggesting that Robbie’s return as Harley Quinn under his tenure as DC Universe co-CEO isn’t an improbable notion in the least.
Gunn described Robbie’s action sequence in The Suicide Squad as “probably the coolest action sequence I’ve ever shot,” and that she “embodies the character” among other accolades for the actress in an interview with the Associated Press back before the film’s release.
“She’s able to do the comedy. She’s able to do the drama. And physically, she is a pure athlete and is able to do these stunts in such a graceful, magnificent, beautiful way. And so I wrote the biggest action scene I’ve ever done all around (Robbie’s character) Harley, and it was so fun to create just on every level from working with the stunt guys all the way through to working with her. It’s probably my favorite four minutes of film I’ve ever shot before. [Margot] can do anything. Or I thought she could do anything. And then one day she had to sing and I said, ‘OK, well you can do everything but one thing.’ But she’s such a great actress. She embodies the character.”
