Details surrounding Deadpool 3 have been swirling since late 2020, when it was first announced that the Merc with a Mouth’s third film installment would be the first R-rated MCU movie ever, according to Marvel Studios overseer Kevin Feige.
Although circumstances surrounding how exactly a character as “adult-oriented” in nature as Deadpool will be integrated into the PG-13 Marvel Cinematic Universe are still vague, recent acknowledgements from the film’s writers seem to suggest that the film’s tone will remain R-rated and the characters/narrative won’t be toned down to fit therein.
Deadpool 3 co-writer Rhett Rheese, who also wrote for the first two Deadpool films, further affirmed that working on the third film hasn’t been much different despite this being the Regeneratin’ Degenerate’s first adventure underneath the Disney MCU banner.
“It’s almost like putting on a comfy old sweater,” Reese said in a sit down with DiscussingFilm. “Marvel’s really given us the support to maintain the tone and the vision that we have for it. They’ve been very hands-off and supportive, but they’ve also let us do what we do. So really, it’s just been fun. We’re mad scientists back in the laboratory again. Deadpool is our favorite who will always be the character I think we’re most associated with, and we’re very grateful for being allowed to write him again. So it’s a blast. It’s like going back to school again after having summer off. It’s pretty fun.”
The “hands off” approach, as Reese put it, stems from Marvel Studios recognizing the success the writers have had with the previous two Deadpool films and being “incredibly supportive” as a result.
“Don’t worry about that, they’ve been very supportive with regard to that,” Reese explained to Den of Geek regarding their creative process with Deadpool 3. “Now when it comes to a particular joke, if we cross a line, maybe we’ll hear at some point, ‘Maybe not that joke.’ But I think they’ve been incredibly supportive of what we’re doing, because obviously we were doing it separate from them for a long time, and I think they’ve seen the success and they’ve had their own even greater success. So hopefully it’ll be a marriage made in heaven. But we’ve definitely got their support, and that’s a great thing to feel.”
Deadpool 3 is still in development and does not, at the time of this writing, have a release date attached. The film will, of course, once again see Ryan Reynolds reprising his role as the titular character. We’ll keep you updated as more information on Deadpool 3 becomes available.
