It’s a bit ironic, especially for a character as talkative as Deadpool, that there hasn’t been too much chatter surrounding what sort of moves the money-making Merc with a Mouth’s would be making regarding his upcoming sequel, Deadpool 3; since the $71.3 billion merger between Disney and 21st Century Fox took place, pretty much all we knew was that Deadpool would be one of the characters, alongside the Fantastic Four and X-Men, added to the Marvel Cinematic Universe fold and that series mainstay Ryan Reynold would be reprising his eponymous role.
An exclusive source from Deadline revealed the first big news on Friday morning: Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin, Emmy-award winning writers and executive producers of Bob’s Burgers and showrunners of upcoming Fox series The Great North have landed the job as scriptwriters, chosen specifically by Reynolds (who also produces the Deadpool films, alongside Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner) after month-long meetings with various prospects pitching their ideas for the next installment in the Regeneratin’ Degenerate’s movie adventures.
Deadpool 3 will mark the first time Deadpool appears under Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s banner and it’ll be interesting to see how the character, far more amoral, foul-mouthed and fourth-wall-breaking than any character we’ve seen in the MCU thus far, will fit into the big picture as the MCU kicks into Phase 4, reportedly one of its most diverse and inclusive phases yet. Phase 4 will kick off with such films as Black Widow starring Scarlett Johansson, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings starring Simu Liu, Eternals, Thor: Love and Thunder (which recently announced Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord would be joining the cast), the untitled Spider-Man: Far From Home sequel starring Tom Holland, and Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, which the Disney+ series WandaVision will directly lead into.
Although it hasn’t been confirmed as of the time of this writing, Deadpool 3 is expected to retain the R-rating of the first two films and will ostensibly need a new director, considering David Leitch, director of Deadpool 2 will be busy with prior engagements all the way through 2021. Disney isn’t known for its R-rated properties but considering the R-rated Deadpool from 2016 brought in $783 million and its sequel Deadpool 2 brought in $785 million, it might be prudent to keep Deadpool’s movie adventures for mature audiences.
