Ben Schwartz says playing Plastic Man in James Gunn’s DCU would be ‘a dream come true’

As the voice of the eponymous, super-speedster in the Sonic the Hedgehog film series (whose three films combined have raked in an amazing $1 billion at the box office), Ben Schwartz is no stranger to wise-cracking, fictional characters beloved over the world.

So what’s next for the 43-year-old actor and comedian (besides the inevitable Sonic the Hedgehog 4 of course)? How about a stretchy superhero from a successful comic book movie universe? No, we’re not talking Reed Richards from the Fantastic Four (who will be played by Pedro Pascal in the Marvel Cinematic Universe) but Plastic Man in James Gunn’s DC Universe.

Schwartz, who has expressed his love for the character on social media since 2018 recently reiterated his desire to play the quirky, shapeshifter, real name Patrick “Eel” O’Brian, who first appeared in 1941’s Police Comics, after a fan posed the question to him on X.

“It would be a dream come true,” Schwartz said. “But whoever they get for that role. I’ll be excited that the character is out there in the world in a big fun way. James is in the zone with all of this stuff. He’ll nail it. And I’ll be first in line to buy a ticket.”

As well-suited as Schwartz is to the role (he also has a similarly stretchy character, Shapesmith from Invicible to his voice acting credit), he’s not the only actor who has expressed interest in playing the elongate wisecracker. SNL members Pete Davidson and John Mulaney (who voiced Peter Porker/Spider-Ham in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse) have also voiced enthusiasm for the character (although in more lighthearted, wittily detached fashion).

“Is Plastic Man a DC comic? If you know the answer, call my personal phone,” Mulaney said in an interview with GQ, adding that superhero films are recognized reputed for their big paychecks in recent times. “It’d be a money thing. Honestly, I can answer for Pete as well, it’d be a money thing. Apparently, these movies pay a lot, these action hero things, but that is also changing in today’s ever-evolving media landscape.”

What do you think of the fact that Ben Schwartz says playing Plastic Man in James Gunn’s DCU would be ‘a dream come true’? Do you think Schwartz would be a better fit for Plastic Man than John Mulaney or Pete Davidson?
