Emotions are set to run high with the impending release of Deadpool & Wolverine; not only have the film’s director Shawn Levy and Kevin Feige described the team-up movie as the most emotional Deadpool movie yet but even the film crew shed a few tears during the production, particularly pertaining to the return of Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
“It was one of the craziest things,” executive Wendy Jacobson told the HeyUGuys podcast. “It was the camera test. It was before we started shooting. To see both of those guys, first of all, in costume together was just mind-blowing, but Hugh walking out in the yellow and blue, I mean, there were grown men, like, sobbing on set. So we knew it was a special, very special thing.”
Jackman, who has portrayed Wolverine for 24 years on the big screen has donned a variety of costumes, though never the classic yellow Wolverine suit, which is how he has often been portrayed since first appearing in the pages of Incredible Hulk #180 in November 1974.
Jackman said in a past interview with Variety that “everyone was in black leather” when the first X-Men movie was coming together in 1999 so “part of my brain was institutionalized that that’s the way it is,” referring to the original look of his onscreen Wolverine.
“As soon as I put [the yellow suit] on, I couldn’t believe I never had before,” he said.
Ryan Reynolds added, “I’ve never seen a crew reaction like that,” Ryan Reynolds added. “We barely talked about the suit in the early development because it was a no-brainer. You don’t do this character now unless he’s in the suit.”
The Deadpool films have been on point when it comes to the portrayal of well-known X-Men characters from the comic books and animated series, especially appearance-wise. That’s definitely been the case with supporting characters in the films such as Cable, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Colossus and Juggernaut, the latter two of which were far more comic book and animated-series-accurate than they were in previous X-Men films. That trend will likely continue as Deadpool & Wolverine is set to feature myriad guest-stars ranging from ones we’ve already seen on-screen like Shatterstar, Toad and Callisto to brand-new ones.
What do you think of the fact that Hugh Jackman appearing in the classic yellow Wolverine suit in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ had ‘grown men sobbing on set’? Is the classic yellow Wolverine suit your favorite Wolverine suit or do you prefer one of his others? Let us know in the comments.
