There haven’t been any official plans announced for what sort of escapades Deadpool will be involved with following the box office record-breaking Deadpool & Wolverine (the film earned over $1.3 billion worldwide) and we’re okay with that for the moment. We’re still reveling in how much we enjoyed the film; we’re still trying to discover easter eggs, jokes and meta references; and we’re still pleasantly surprised that the self-proclaimed “Marvel Jesus” lived up to the lofty expectations — with a little help from Wolverine of course.
Notwithstanding, with a film as successful as Deadpool & Wolverine, it’s impossible to say the character won’t return for either a future feature film in the MCU or as an ancillary character in future MCU Phases. There’s one thing that actor Ryan Reynolds believes that Deadpool shouldn’t do after the events of Deadpool & Wolverine and that’s joining the Avengers or the X-Men.
“I don’t think he should ever be an Avenger or an X-Man. If he becomes either, we’re at the end,” said Reynolds in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “I think Deadpool works so well appearing with the X-Men and Avengers, but he always needs to stay an outsider. His ultimate dream is to be accepted and appreciated. But he can’t be accepted. If and when he does become an Avenger or X-Man, we’re at the end of his journey.”
Although he believes Deadpool shouldn’t become an Avenger or an X-Man, Reynolds does have ideas concerning the Merc with a Mouth’s future in the MCU — in particular, he still thinks the synergy with Wolverine has legs (or should that be claws?).
“I have some pitches and ideas, but none of them center on Deadpool,” Reynolds added. “He is a great supporting or ensemble player. And I would always want Deadpool and Wolverine to be paired in some way. Centering Deadpool works best if you take everything away from him and put his back against the wall. I can’t really do that again. A fourth time feels a little iterative and redundant. That doesn’t mean sacrificing fun. There is still an arc for Deadpool which is fulfilling and powerful.”
Do you agree with the comments made by Ryan Reynolds on what Deadpool shouldn’t do in the MCU after ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’? Would you like to see Deadpool become an Avenger or an X-Man or would his violent methodology not mesh well with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes?
