Warning: Spoilers for Deadpool & Wolverine ahead.
One of the most gratifying facets of Deadpool & Wolverine, aside from its abundance of Easter Eggs, was its amassment of well-placed, cleverly-written cameos by characters from the 20th Century Fox Marvel filmverse such as Gambit, Blade the Vampire Hunter and X-23. Although he didn’t make a surprise return in the film, one character central to the Fox Marvel movies was Magneto, who was portrayed in latter films (as a younger version of Ian McKellen’s Erik Lehnsherr) by acclaimed actor Michael Fassbender was mentioned by name.
Does the character’s name drop in Deadpool & Wolverine signify things to come regarding Michael Fassbender returning as Magneto? Maybe.
“Well, you know, I loved working with Hugh [Jackman]. You know, he’s an absolute gentleman; he’s so talented,” Fassbender said on a recent installment of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast.
“I’m a big fan of Ryan [Reynolds] and what he’s done with the Deadpool series,” Fassbender continued, noting that of all the Marvel Cinematic Universe characters, Deadpool is his favorite. Though Fassbender is busy with his family (he’s married to and has two children with actress Alicia Vikander) and his new George Clooney and Grant Heslov-produced Showtime series, The Agency, the 47-year-old actor, who portrayed Magneto in four of the Fox X-Men films, said he wouldn’t rule out a return as the master of magnetism.
“I’ve got two little boys. I want to be available to them and be around,” Fassbender continued. “So right now, my focus and energy is really going to be on The Agency, but you never say never.”
Deadpool & Wolverine was an absolute savage at the box office, clawing in over $1.3 billion worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film of all-time. The previous record holder was 2019’s The Joker, which earned a little over a billion. Deadpool 2 and Deadpool, the previous two installments in the Deadpool movie franchise, are the 4th and 5th highest-grossing R-rated films in history respectively as well.
