Like many other ongoing Hollywood projects right now taking place during the Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strike and the Marvel VFX Artists’ unionization, the production of Deadpool 3 has been delayed — but director Shawn Levy continues to uphold that the ongoing negotiations will do nothing to change Deadpool 3‘s tone. That is, the first-ever R-rated MCU movie will pull no punches when it comes to its R-rating.
“Well, like the rest of our industry, or at least large swath of it, we’re paused,” Levy told Deadline. “We’re halfway through filming Deadpool, co-starring Wolverine. It was a joy every day and that chemistry is as relentless as we all hoped it would be.”
Levy continued, “Our crew and the rest of us are awaiting a fair and equitable deal that ends these strikes and puts this industry, inclusive of our movie, back at work.”
Levy also made it known that unlike recent MCU offerings such as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Thor: Love and Thunder, which were met with tepid reviews from critics, Deadpool 3 would make minimal use of shooting on sound stages with digital environments.
“Our movie is raw, audacious, very much R-rated and we went to great lengths to not shoot it on sound stages with digital environments,” Levy explained.
“We wanted something that felt, grounded, real… You put Hugh Jackman in his most iconic character alongside Ryan Reynolds in his most iconic character; it’s more of a descendant of Midnight Run, and 48 Hours, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles more than it’s a descendant of Airplane,” Levy added.
Deadpool 3 is slated to release in theaters in the US on May 3rd, 2024. The film will see Ryan Reynolds reprising his role as Deadpool along with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine a special co-star billing. Deadpool 3 will also see Morena Baccarin return as Vanessa, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, Stefan Kapičić as Colossus, Karan Soni as Dopinder, Rob Delaney as Peter, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio. Jennifer Garner is rumored to appear as Elektra along with Liev Schrieber’s Sabretooth. Emma Corrin, Matthew Macfadyen and Daniel Radcliffe have also been rumored to appear in undisclosed roles.
