It pains David Harbour to say it, but after playing Jim Hopper on Netflix’s Stranger Things since the show’s inception in 2016, he thinks it’s time for the insanely popular Matt and Ross Duffer-helmed show to finally reach its end.
“What’s funny is when I started the show, I never, ever wanted it to end,” Harbour told DiscussingFilm. “That’s why I love the show. I think it’s a great show, even if I wasn’t in it. Now we’re almost nine years from filming the first season, and I think it is time for it to end. But it is, of course, very bittersweet. You know, there’s a sadness there. But also, we’ve all grown up.”
Harbour added that not only is it time for the show’s cast to branch out and try new things, but that the show’s talented creators, the Duffer Brothers, should be afforded that opportunity as well.
“It is time for us to leave that nest and try other things and different projects,” Harbour continued. “And to let the Duffer brothers try different things as well. I mean, those guys are so talented. I want to see what they come up with next. So it is bittersweet, but it’s definitely time.”
Harbour has seen a resurgence in his career since appearing in Stranger Things, with recent roles including a pugilistic Santa Claus in Violet Night and his second appearance as Marvel Cinematic Universe super-soldier Red Guardian in the upcoming Thunderbolts.
Stranger Things Season 5, which the Duffer Bros. have stated will be the final season of the Netflix series, is currently in production. As of this writing, the show will reportedly see Will (Schnapp), Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and Mike (Finn Wolfhard) return to fight the final battle to save Hawkins.
Harbor will next appear in Netflix’s upcoming series We Have a Ghost, alongside Jennifer Coolidge, Anthony Mackie and Tig Notaro. The synopsis for the show is as follows: “The discovery that their house is haunted by a ghost named Ernest makes Kevin’s family a social media sensation. But when Kevin and Ernest get to the bottom of the mystery of Ernest’s past, they become targets of the CIA.”
